* The Board of Commissioners
meets the 2nd & 4th Mondays of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the large
courtroom of the County Courthouse, 7 East Main Street, Brevard. Agenda
items are to be given to Clerk to the Board by the end of the day, the
Monday prior to Commissioners meeting.
* Meetings are open to the public and
a public comment period is scheduled for each regular meeting. Citizens
must sign up for public comment and a sign-in sheet is
placed in the Board Room prior to the meeting. Comments are limited to
five minutes.
* Minutes are recorded in the
Office to the Clerk to the Board, a copy is on file in the County Manager’s
Office and on the
County’s
website.

Mike Hawkins was elected in November 2008. He is a 1975
graduate of Brevard High School and has both a Bachelor of Arts
and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He is president of Pisgah Enterprises Inc., a holding company
which owns and operates residential and commercial real estate
properties, and Pisgah Fish Camp restaurant in Pisgah Forest.
He lives in Brevard with his wife, Claudia, who is Chief
Financial and Operations Officer at Brevard Music Center. Mike
and Claudia have one daughter, Allison, currently a
Morehead-Cain Scholar at UNC-Chapel Hill.
He has been active in numerous civic organizations, including
board memberships in the Brevard-Transylvania Chamber of
Commerce (board chair), the Transylvania County Tourism
Development Agency (board chair), Smart Start of Transylvania
County (board chair), Transylvania Partnership (board chair),
Pisgah Forest Gateway Association (board chair), Pisgah Forest
Rotary (president), Blue Ridge Community College, Transylvania
County Library, WNC Regional Economic Development Commission
(Advantage West), the Transylvania Endowment, and Trend Mental
Health Agency. He coached soccer at Brevard High School for six
years, and has also served four years as a church deacon. In
2011 Mike received the Duke Energy Citizenship Award, for
service to Transylvania County.
Mike is current chair of the Transylvania County
Sesquicentennial Steering Committee, which is facilitating the
events of the 2011 Transylvania Sesquicentennial celebrations.

Larry is a
native of Transylvania County and was elected to the Board of
Commissioners in November 2010. This was his first run for
political office. Larry is a graduate of Brevard High School
and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Western Carolina
University. After graduation from Western Carolina he entered
the United States Marine Corps and upon completion of Officer
Candidate School was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant as
an infantry officer. After completion of active duty he returned
to Transylvania County with his family. He remained in the US
Marine Corps Reserves and retired as a Colonel after over 30
years total service.
Larry worked at
the former Ecusta paper mill for over 27 years primarily in
manufacturing supervision and marketing management. He traveled
extensively around the world in support of the marketing and
sales efforts for Ecusta. His main areas of responsibility were
the Asia Pacific Area and Central and South America. Just prior
to the closure of Ecusta he joined the delfortgroup which is
located in Austria and has paper mills in various parts of the
world. He currently provides technical support to a number of
major manufacturers located in the states that use papers
produced by the delfortgroup and he works from his home in
Pisgah Forest.
Larry is married
to the former Jill Sheridan and has 3 grown children and two
grandchildren. His granddaughter attends Pisgah Forest
Elementary School. He is involved with a number of veteran’s
organizations and civic groups. His wife Jill is involved with
numerous local historical societies, DAR, Colonial Dames and is
chairperson of the Transylvania County Abandoned Cemetery Board.
He and his wife attend the First United Methodist Church in
Brevard.

Jason Chappell -

Jason is currently serving
in his second term on the Board of Commissioners. First elected
in November 2004 and re-elected in November 2008. He served as
Chairman of the Board of Commissioners from 2004-2008. He and
his wife Tessa have one daughter Jesse Reagan and live in the
Old Toxaway Community. Both he and Tessa’s family have lived in
Transylvania County for generations.
Mr.
Chappell graduated from Rosman High School and went on to
receive his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from
Appalachian State University. Jason also completed the Vision
Brevard/Transylvania Program in 2007 and is currently enrolled
in Blue Ridge Community Colleges’ Inaugural class of the Blue
Ridge Community College Leadership Institute. Since 2006 Jason
has been recognized as a Certified Workforce Development
Professional by the National Association of Workforce
Development Professionals. He has worked for the Henderson
County JobLink Career Center at Blue Ridge Community College
since 2003 and is currently serving as the Director.
Jason
and his family worship at the Old Toxaway Baptist Church where
he is a Deacon and Adult Sunday School Teacher.
Mr.
Chappell was recognized by the Governor and the North Carolina
Commission on Workforce Development as the Recipient of the
Wayne Daves Award for Outstanding Achievement in Workforce
Development in October 2010.
Prior
to his election to Board of County Commissioners, Jason was
twice elected to the Transylvania County Board of Education
serving as Vice-Chair from 2003-2004. He has also previously
served on the American Red Cross Brevard Chapter Board of
Directors, Community Focus Foundation of Transylvania County and
Rosman High School School Improvement Team.
Jason’s current involvement includes serving as a Advisory Board
Member of the North Carolina Christian Action League, Secretary
of the Land of Sky Regional Council and member of the Executive
Committee, member of the Transylvania County Personnel Board,
Board member of Dupont State Forest Advisory Board, member of
the Transylvania County Work First Plan Committee and various
other boards and committees.

Kelvin is currently serving in his
second term on the Board of Commissioners. He was first elected
in November 2004 and re-elected in November 2008. He served as
Vice-Chairman for 4 years. Prior to being elected as County
Commissioner, Kelvin served on the County Planning Board and
also served as a member of the Transylvania County Board of
Education from 1992-1996. He currently serves as the County
Commission’s representative to the Board of Health.
Kelvin graduated from Rosman High
School and attended Western Carolina University and Blue Ridge
Community College. He is the owner of KP Steel, a local
business, where his son Ian and daughter Jillian work alongside
him.
Kelvin
and his wife Gayla attend Amazing Grace Baptist Church where he
serves as the Sunday School Superintendent.

If you could not tell by
his last name, Daryle is a native and lifelong resident of
Transylvania County. Daryle's wife and best friend is Michelle
LeQuire Hogsed and they are the proud parents of three beautiful
children, Gracie, Helms, and Monroe. The Hogsed’s live in Pisgah
Forest and are active members of Little River Baptist Church
where Daryle serves as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher.
He is a 1996 graduate of Brevard High School and
a 2000 graduate of Gardner-Webb University. While at
Gardner-Webb, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree
in Management of Information Systems. In 2005, he went on to
obtain his Master of the Arts degree in American History from
Western Carolina University.
Currently, Daryle works in the field of
Information Technology and teaches history courses on a variety
of subjects for Montreat College. He enjoys playing guitar and
bluegrass music with friends as time allows. Most of all,
however, he enjoys spending his free time with his family.
Daryle was elected to his first term on the Board
of Commissioners in 2006 and is currently serving his second
term to which he was elected in 2010.
