The Transylvania Soil & Water Conservation District's mission is to ensure a quality rural and
urban environment with clean water, protected soil resources, properly managed forests, as
well as wildlife and an environmentally and economically viable agricultural community.
"We believe this can be achieved through voluntary programs and without violating private
            property rights."

                                                        What is a Conservation District?

Transylvania SWCD is one of 96 Soil and Water Conservation Districts in North Carolina.
Soil and Water Conservation Districts were formed across the country as a way of
addressing soil erosion on cropland during the Dust Bowl Era of the 1930's. The county's
very first SWCD, The Brown Creek SWCD, was formed in Anson County, North Carolina
in 1937. The Transylvania Soil and Water Conservation District was formed in 1955. Today,
the Transylvania SWCD addresses conservation issues in the county by offering technical
assistance, educational programs, resources, and by locating and administering cost share
programs and grants to assist landowners with conservation practices on their land.

The District is governed by a five person Board who have a grassroots philosophy of protecting
Transylvania County's natural resources. Two supervisors are appointed, and three are elected.

                                                        Charles Bryson - Vice Chairman

                                                            Scott Galloway - Member
                                                              Alan Johnson - Member

As of 2009, the Transylvania Soil & Water Conservation District has encumbered $3,270,526 in
funds for conservation practices, through voluntary programs, on private property in the county.
Through these programs the District has prevented an estimated 62,570 Tons of sediment from
entering Transylvania Streams! That is equivalent to 5, 214 loads from a 12 ton dump truck!
