Transylvania County Public Transit Receives Transit System of the Year from North Carolina Public Transportation Association

Transylvania residents have another reason to celebrate excellence in local government with the award of Transit System of the Year to the county’s transit system.  Transylvania In Motion (TIM) provides transit services throughout the county including ride services for elderly and disabled and public fixed route service operating weekly.

Transportation staff member Greta Gosnell received the award on behalf of TIM at the North Carolina Public Transportation Association (NCPTA) Annual Conference in Cherokee in April. The Association honored all systems that helped with emergency response during Hurricane Helene. TIM staff were a critical part of the County’s Emergency Response providing emergency transportation for residents to get to the shelter, return home and to help discharge patients get home safely from the hospital during the aftermath of Helene.  Their dedication during an emergency reflected how the TIM approaches services on a daily basis.

“Every day requires a team effort from office staff and our drivers to provide the services we do,” said Greta Gonsell, Transit Operations Supervisor, “I am truly proud of the recognition for our drivers.”

Transylvania County has been providing paratransit services for decades supporting elderly and disabled resident’s ability to stay in their homes with rides to grocery shopping and doctor’s appointments. Public transit services were limited until 2021 when County Commissioners approved an expansion to offer a fixed route service.  The TIM can be seen ever since all around the county providing high quality transit services.

“I hear from citizens regularly how much they appreciate transit services and how it has impacted them or their family. It is an important service that can mean the difference between continuing to live independently and having to find new living arrangements.  Our drivers are known to go the extra mile and become like family to our clients,” County Commission Chairman Jason Chappell said.

The Board of Commissioners have invited the TIM staff to the May 27, 2025 Commission meeting to recognize them for the award and to thank them on behalf of our community.  Citizens are welcome to attend the meeting starting at 6 PM in the County Commission meeting room.
